Abstract

A compilation of six popular science reports on current findings and debates in health, science, nature, and history. It discusses the potential effects of excessive social media use on mental health and the brain; the loss of genetic diversity in vegetable crops; and the observation of tiny plasma vortices on the Sun’s visible surface using the DKIST telescope. It also describes a method for transforming PVC waste into a high-quality lubricant. In the natural sciences, the section critically examines the claim that trees can anticipate solar eclipses and explains how DNA analysis of whale feces revealed a more varied diet among southern right whales. Finally, it reports how LiDAR technology helped estimate the presence of more than 20,000 pre-Columbian earthworks in southwestern Amazonia. Together, these reports show how new technologies and careful analysis expand scientific knowledge while encouraging a critical assessment of emerging claims.
